Men's UTRS: The Best Scores of 2013 Updated September 9

He's baaaaaaack!

Last year, the All Around created some handy dandy rankings, leading up to the Olympics. This year, not so much. So, I've decided to create the UTRS (Uncle Tim Ranking System), which, for those who care, is pronounced "uterus." Think of my ranking system as a surrogate until The All Around steps in and takes over.

As per usual, take these rankings with a grain of salt. (Pro Tip: Never bet your life savings based on my numbers–or my predictions for that matter.) Judging varies from meet to meet, and as you can see, I've culled these scores from several meets. I've included the competition names so that you can decide how much crack the judges smoked before handing out the scores.

More than anything, you should think of these tables like this: New quad, new Code of Points. What the H is a good score nowadays? Well, let me show you…

Key:

  • Bold Face: An update since the last iteration of the UTRS.
  • An asterisk (*): Usually denotes a routine for which I have a final score without a D score.
  • Links, when available, are provided for the top 5 routines.
  • Parentheses ( ): The U.S. Nationals used a peculiar bonus system. (See image at the bottom.) Even though start value bonus was not in effect, the execution bonus was added to the D score. To the best of my ability, I have adjusted the scores for the U.S. men on the individual apparatus. However, I have not had time to adjust their all-around scores. Consequently, the U.S. men's all-around scores have parentheses around them.
  • Many, many, many thanks to Chinese Gymnastics Tumblr for their help with the transliteration of names!!

  1. Kristian Thomas had a 15.600 on HB at the London Open. His VT score from there is also listed as a 15.450 but as far as I can see that's only a single-vault score so if you have a two-vault score from the Westminster Cup then you must be right. I can't find any 2-vault results on BG's spreadsheet though, so I think maybe there was no VT title at that comp and everyone just did one vault?

Also fucking hell China ... I've never heard of most of these guys before! Any chance of some kind of guide to their team before worlds?

    2. Here's a short-ish guide to China's MAG worlds team. The nominative registration list currently has

      Zhou Shixiong (AA)
      Lin Chaopan (AA)
      You Hao (PB, FX, HB)
      Zhang Zhongbo (VT)
      Zhang Hongtao (PH)
      Liu Yang (SR)

We have three gymnasts doing quals on each event. For a breakdown of each individual gymnast, we have

      1. Zhou Shixiong: AA, PB Champion, HB Silver, FX Bronze @ National Games. It also seems like he sat his vault during AA Finals (or was very close, score 5.6/13.867). Other EF scores are 6.5/14.734 for floor, 7.0/15.900 for PB, and 7.0/15.667 for HB. He's a lock for the Worlds roster.

      2. Lin Chaopan: Did very well at the National Championships in May (think he finished 2nd or 3rd AA), but only ninth at the National Games and didn't pick up any EF medals either. Hopefully he gets dropped.

      3. You Hao: 5th AA, 6th SR, 4th PB. 6.8/15.300 on SR EF and 7.1/15.667 for PB EF. Also scored 15.000 on PH during the AA finals (6.4/15.000). I don't actually know what he's doing here.

      4. Zhang Zhongbo: 2nd VT, (6.0/8.967 and 6.0/9.2). Qu Ruiyang finished first with a 6.0/15.3 and 6.0/14.8. The two are more or less interchangeable.

      5. Zhang Hongtao: 2nd PH, 6.8/15.800. 2009 World Champion, PH specialist.

      6. Liu Yang: 2nd SR, 6.8/8.934. (1st place was 2009 SR world champion Yan Mingyong with a 6.8/9.234).

Anyways, to conclude, slots 2 and 3 may see some movement.

    3. Thanks so much both of you! There was me thinking the Chinese men's team wouldn't be that exciting with so many retirements and they whack out a bunch of potential superstars at the last minute (that was the source of my expletives by the way - total amazement at the depth of the programme!). Obviously I should have heard of Zhang H. though; I'll have to do some revision :)

Found video of Kristian's vaults: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcJWr_Mh5ZM

If the first was supposed to be piked then it wasn't very clean, but lord that's some HEIGHT.

  4. He scored 89.95 during AA finals so the 90.5 is from qualifications/team final.

    FX 15.1
    PH 15.65
    SR 14.95
    VT 14.5
    PB 15.9
    HB 14.4

  5. Just fyi, it was "Inter-highschool championships" where Kenzo (name-健三) Shirai (surname-白井) got that score. And btw, you can just reverse the name and surname of all the Chinese gymnasts in the list for the uniformity in name ordering.
